Show Rules & Tips

RULES

  1. Annual subscription: Annual subscription to the Society is £5.
  2. Exhibits: All exhibits displayed for judging must be grown in the exhibitor’s garden, or made by the exhibitor during the twelve months prior to the show. Plants from which flowers are cut must have been in the exhibitor’s possession for at least six weeks before the show, including for floral art. Ingredients within section C do not have to be home grown unless specified for that class. The exhibits should be prepared for show according to the RHS Horticultural Show Handbook (a ‘Tips for Showing’ booklet is available from committee members).
  3. Entries: The spring show is informal. Bring your entries on the day. For summer and autumn show entries, please use the form on page 23 of the schedule. Circle the class no’s to be entered. Only one entry per class or competition per exhibitor is allowed. Send the completed form (or email/text name & class no’s) to either secretary by the Saturday prior to the show. You may add late entries by 8pm on the Wednesday prior to the show but no later. Exhibits not on entry forms will not be accepted on the day of the show.
  4. Class 1 ‘Collection of Produce’: All exhibits in this class must be shown in boxes or trays no more than 24” x 30” internally; the produce must be displayed within this area. Each of the four varieties will be marked out of 20 points. Each tray will have a maximum of 80 points.
  5. Summer & Autumn shows: Exhibits will be accepted from 9:15 am and must be staged by 10:45 am on the morning of the show. Any exhibit received after 10:45 am can only be accepted as ‘not for competition’. Judging will commence at 11:00 am.
  6. Judging: The judges are empowered to disqualify any exhibit which is not according to schedule (‘NAS’). Points are awarded in each class - 3 points for the winner, 2 for 2nd place and 1 for 3rd place. These are totalled for the trophies awarded for ‘most points’. Class 1 and ‘Top’ classes are excluded from these totals.  If there are less than five entries in any class, then awards will be at the discretion of the judge.
  7. Trophies: These will be presented at 3:30 pm, followed by a raffle draw. All trophies won the previous year must be returned to one of the secretaries by the Saturday before the relevant show.
  8. Public Voting: To involve members and add some fun, the winners of some classes will be decided by public voting in the Spring and Autumn Shows rather than by our usual judges.Classes marked ‘public vote’ will not count towards trophies or awards.
